Trauma Informed Occupational Therapy

Are you finding it hard to relax?

Are you finding it hard to assert your needs in your relationships?

Do you easily get overwhelmed when in large crowds or groups of people?

Are you struggling to sleep due to chronic stress?

Are you putting off going to the doctor due to fear of the unknown or past medical trauma?

Do you regularly cancel plans with friends or family due to anxiety?

Are you experiencing difficulty with managing and regulating your emotions—so much so that they are negatively affecting your ability to engage in work, school, or socialize?

Are you currently in therapy but struggling to apply what you are learning to your everyday life?

Have you ever considered seeing a mental health occupational therapist (OT)?

OTs arguably have the best job in the world. They focus on helping people engage in the activities that are most meaningful to them. Whether a client wants to focus on stress management so that they can be more present at home, or social skill development to get back in the dating world, a mental health OT can be the support system to get them where they want to be.

Only about 2% of all OTs work in mental health, and even a smaller amount specialize in adolescent and adult mental wellness. OT is a very holistic and client-centered profession.

When working with clients, OTs view the individual as the expert when it comes to their life. For this reason, OT is one of the most customizable professions in healthcare.

The purpose of OT is simply to add meaningful living to your day, versus days to your life.

Clients set their own goals and are in the driver’s seat each session. Once goals are determined, the OT will use a variety of methods and interventions to help guide and support the client towards achievement of their chosen goals.

In mental health, OTs can work with clients on sensory process as it relates to function, emotion regulation, assertiveness training, self-care, relaxation and stress reduction techniques, coping strategies, symptom management, social skills/ communication, emotional intelligence development, productive leisure, sleep hygiene, and so much more.

Mental health OTs are present and future focused. They are considered a complementary profession to other mental health therapies. OTs can often fast track skills that are being discussed and learned during (mental health) therapy sessions by helping clients successfully apply them in their everyday life.

OTs are in the business of doing, being, becoming.
