Every day, people are turning to alternative wellness approaches like Reiki- but what exactly is it?

At its core, Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing practice in which a practitioner uses light touch or no touch, placing their hands above parts of the body to amplify energy flow, support relaxation, and improve the well-being of a participant. Reiki is not a replacement for psychotherapy, medical care, or medication. Instead, it can be one supportive element within a comprehensive, integrative approach to healing.
History of Reiki
As for its history, Reiki is ancient, and many versions of it exist. It is recognized amongst thousands of years of healing traditions throughout the world, including ancient and modern concepts described in traditional Chinese Medicine, Indigenous healing practices, and spiritual traditions. Many healing traditions throughout history have used forms of touch, prayer, and energy-based practices. The modern system of Reiki was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1920s.”He learned Reiki after learning Sanskrit to understand the ancient Indian Vedas, and from Buddhist Monks. It is from him that we get the Japanese word “Reiki,” often translated to as “universal life energy,” and Reiki’s arrival into the United States.
Science behind Reiki
From a scientific perspective, researchers have been studying Reiki since the 1970s and have concluded a few things: Reiki reduces stress, decreases anxiety, improves mood, and promotes relaxation. Relaxation is rejuvenating to the nervous system, so recipients report feeling more calm, grounded, and connected to their bodies following receiving Reiki. This is called nervous system regulation. It is the key to charging and healing the human biomeatsuit. All living organisms have this god-given (nature-driven) ability.
Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest, digest, and restore” state- is the reward of regulating your nervous system. This is homeostasis, a state associated with healing and recovery. In this state, the heart rate slows, muscles relax, brain waves might change, and the body shifts its resources away from surviving and toward restoring.
Spiritual or Secular
Reiki is a healing modality. It is not religious. So why is it often associated with spiritual practices? Because Reiki is rooted in principles that all religions share, including the golden rule. As a result, Reiki was/is a healing practice in many different religions, and implemented in many different parts of the world. The five principles, as scribed by Dr. Usui, encourage humans to:
- Not anger or worry
- Be grateful
- Be honest
- Be kind to every living being

Reiki as a Wellness Modality
Today, Reiki is often given as a service on its own, maybe in association with Yoga or other wellness therapies. It can be one-on-one between a practitioner and recipient, or a group setting. The practitioner is not viewed as the source of healing, but rather as a conduit through which energy can flow. The science of this exchange is called the phenomenon of spontaneous self-organization- which says that when vibrating things come into close proximity, they will eventually start to vibrate together at the same frequency and amplify the energy. We see this phenomenon across many examples in physics, biology, chemistry and neuroscience. Evidence of the west catching back up with the east.
How Reiki Fits into Healing at Mind Body Healing Collective
At Mind Body Healing Collective, Reiki is offered as a complementary wellness service that can support relaxation, nervous system regulation, and mind-body awareness. While Reiki is not a replacement for psychotherapy, medical care, or medication, some individuals find it to be a meaningful addition to their overall healing journey.
Many of the people we work with are navigating chronic stress, anxiety, trauma recovery, burnout, grief, or life transitions. Because these experiences often affect both the mind and body, we believe healing can benefit from approaches that help individuals slow down, reconnect with themselves, and cultivate a greater sense of calm and presence.
Reiki may be used as a standalone wellness session or alongside other services offered at Mind Body Healing Collective, depending on each person’s goals and preferences. Our approach is always client-centered, honoring the unique path each individual takes toward healing and well-being. So whether viewed through a spiritual lens, a wellness lens, or a nervous-system lens, Reiki offers something many people are searching for: a dedicated opportunity to slow down, feel supported, and reconnect with themselves. In the fast-paced world of 2026, that experience alone can be profoundly healing.
