What Type of Therapy Is Right for You? EMDR, Talk Therapy, or Integrative Support

AASP

Trying to figure out what kind of therapy you need can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already carrying a lot. Beyond choosing a therapy approach, the structure and pacing of care can also matter.

At Mind Body Healing Collective, we offer several options to meet you where you are. Some people start with EMDR therapy. Others are drawn to talk therapy, somatic work, or trauma therapy intensives. This post breaks down the differences and helps you decide what might be the best fit for your healing process.

EMDR therapy to process memories

EMDR Therapy: A Different Way to Process Trauma

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps your brain reprocess difficult or overwhelming memories so they no longer feel emotionally charged. It uses bilateral stimulation, like eye movements or tapping, to support that process.

EMDR can be especially helpful for:

  • PTSD
  • Medical trauma
  • Traumatic loss
  • Emotional reactivity that feels out of proportion

At MBHC, EMDR is offered through a Somatic Experiencing (SE) lens, meaning we’re tracking your nervous system and pacing the work in a way that helps your body feel safe. This adds depth, flexibility, and containment to what can sometimes be an activating process.

Talk Therapy to process trauma

Talk Therapy: Support for Anxiety, Identity, and Emotional Fatigue

Sometimes, the most healing thing is having a space to talk through what you’re feeling with someone who gets it. Our trauma-informed talk therapy supports clients navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, and identity shifts.

This work is also especially helpful for people who feel like they’ve outgrown certain roles—whether it’s perfectionism, caregiving, or just holding it all together. Talk therapy helps reconnect you with what matters most and move toward a life that feels more aligned with who you are now.

We often integrate body awareness, mindfulness, and nervous system education into this work to support long-term regulation and resilience.

Trauma Therapy Intensives Scottsdale AZ

When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough: Trauma Therapy Intensives

If you feel stuck in weekly therapy or want to do focused work in a shorter time frame, trauma therapy intensives may be a better fit.

Intensives are extended sessions (or multiple sessions over a few days) that allow you to make meaningful progress without waiting weeks between appointments. They’re personalized to your needs and often include EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and nervous system regulation tools.

Intensives can be a good option for:

  • Complex or developmental trauma
  • High-functioning people who feel overwhelmed internally
  • Clients who want to deepen their work or process something specific
  • Individuals preparing for or integrating a major life event

What does “Integrative” mean in therapy?

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to healing. An integrative trauma therapy model allows us to pull from a variety of evidence-based modalities, supporting both the mind and the body while meeting each person where they are emotionally and physiologically.

One of our core approaches is Somatic Experiencing. This method focuses on how trauma and stress live in the nervous system and supports healing through body awareness, regulation, and slow, titrated release of stored survival energy. It’s a foundational lens that guides all the work we do, from talk therapy to EMDR to intensives.

Depending on your needs, integrative sessions and services may also include:

  • EMDR
  • The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
  • Mindfulness and nervous system education
  • Strengths-based relational therapy
  • Breathwork classes, somatic yoga, and Reiki to support embodied healing and regulation

We tailor the work to you: what your nervous system can handle, what your goals are, and what kind of support actually feels helpful in the moment.

Not Sure Where to Start? That’s Okay.

You don’t have to have it all figured out before reaching out. That’s what the first conversation is for.

Some people start with talk therapy to explore anxiety, or long-term emotional patterns. Others may be more supported by Somatic Experiencing and EMDR, especially when trauma symptoms are showing up in ways that talking alone doesn’t shift. And some are ready for deeper work in the form of trauma therapy intensives.

What to expect in trauma therapy

What to Expect in the First Session

Your first session is about connection and understanding what you’re carrying. We’ll explore what’s been working, what hasn’t, and what kind of support feels most doable. If you’re interested in SE, EMDR or an intensive, we’ll also assess for clinical readiness and create a plan that feels safe and aligned.

Ready to take the next step?

Whether you’re exploring EMDR, looking for individual therapy, or considering an intensive, we’ll help you figure out what feels right for you.

Complex Trauma
How Trauma Impacts Your Nervous System

Trauma doesn’t just live in your thoughts.
It lives in your body.

Maybe it shows up as a tight chest, an unsettled gut, or the way your shoulders stay braced even when you think you’re “fine.” Maybe you feel shut down, wired but tired, or anxious for no obvious reason. That’s not you being broken — that’s your nervous system doing its best to protect you.At Mind Body Healing Collective, we understand that trauma healing isn’t just about talking through what happened. It’s about helping your body feel safe again. That’s why we focus on therapies that support nervous system regulation, mind-body reconnection, and meaningful, lasting change.
